Supreme Court Could End Trump’s Tariffs

The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, said he is very confident that Trump’s tariff plan will win in the Supreme Court.

But—here’s the twist—if the Supreme Court says Trump’s tariffs are not legal, the government will have to refund billions of dollars. That means giving the money back to businesses who already paid these tariffs.

Now, what are tariffs?
Tariffs are like taxes the government puts on things that come from other countries.

Imagine you buy toys, clothes, or even phones from other countries. If tariffs are added, the price goes up. Businesses and people have to pay more.

why this is such a big deal:

  • If Trump’s tariffs are thrown out by the court, the U.S. government may have to give back $750 billion to $1 trillion. That is a huge amount of money!

  • That refund could be like a surprise jackpot for businesses, but terrible news for the U.S. 4Treasury.

The Supreme Court could take until June 2026 to make a final decision. That’s almost two years away!

But Trump has asked the court to move faster, maybe by November this year. Until then, the government is collecting these tariffs.

Now, here’s the smart part. Trump’s team is not just waiting. They are also preparing other ways to keep tariffs, even if the court blocks them.

One way is using something called Section 232. This allows the president to add tariffs if he thinks imports are hurting U.S. national security.

That’s why Trump already put tariffs on things like steel, aluminum, and he’s even talked about adding them on semiconductors and medicines.

Another big change: the U.S. government ended the “de minimis rule.”

This rule used to let people buy things from other countries under $800 without paying tariffs. Now that’s gone!

Because of this, even postal traffic—the packages coming from other countries—has dropped by more than 80%.
